lt500r differance between a 87 la sleeve to 88 to 90 la sleeve?
« on: January 10, 2014, 12:32:22 pm »
hi there, im new to this forum and have a question,,, currently rebuilding my 89 quadzilla engine, purchased an la sleeve to have pressed in,now when my engine builder has come to take the measurements he said that the new sleeve is way to small ? now i am wondering if i have been sent a sleeve for an 87 engine by mistake? i first noticed the sleeve was a bit different when i first received it as it didn't have the cut outs at the bottom of the sleeve where it clears the crankshaft, like the original one has?
i have since checked on ebay and the one i purchased says on the add that it fits all years from 87 through to 90. now i know that that isnt correct and the 87s had a diff sleeve?
are the 87 sleeves smaller in outside diamiter and do you guys think i have been sent an 87 sleeve?
would really appreciate any advice thanks

The heavy duty sleeves that I buy from LA sleeve have the same outside diameter on the 87 and the 88 to 90 sleeves.  The heavy duty sleeves have an outside diameter that will require all of the original sleeve to machined out to install the new sleeve.  The heavy duty sleeve also has a rib that has to be removed once the sleeve is installed.

The sleeves that I have seen on Ebay are very thin and much less expensive are made to go inside the existing iron sleeve.  Heat transfer on a sleeve inside a sleeve is very poor.

The 87 sleeve rear transfer port has two ports where the 88 to 90 sleeve's rear transfer is one single port.

I charge about 125.00 more to install the heavy duty sleeve than the thin sleeve because of the extra machining time and hand work on the port matching.
