LT500 what fuel filter?

So I'd like to pickup another fuel filter for my 89 LT500
Bought this bike from the 2nd owner and he isn't sure he changed it since he bought it back in 1994 (He didn't ride it much).
I'd like to have a spare for an upcoming trip just in case so what should I get?

Its been 2 days so I can only conclude 1 of 2 things:

1) My question is dumb
2) No one has a good answer

No fuel filter listed on the OEM parts list but I did find a post on this site talking about fuel filters that limited the fuel flow so I want to make sure to get something "right"!

Remove the tank drain most of the fuel from your fuel tank plug the vent line and flip it over. Remove the petcock . The only filters in the system are attached clean with some simple green and a tooth brush.

Iceracer I just took this picture of the in-line filter on my ride. This is what I'm wanting to get a spare for.......so if I'm reading you right this isn't "stock"? Looks like the petcock has a slow leak or maybe its the high temp. of -3 today it doesn't like.

Most people think the inline filters on plastic tank bikes are unnessacery (sorry for the spelling of that word, always gives me trouble) and many don't run them. I just put any pancake or cone filter on my bikes. I haven't had a problem with low fuel flow on any of them. My 250 doesn't have the intake filters either so that's my only filter lol

But yea just head down to your local autozone or napa and scoop up a pancake or cone (pancake filters flow more IMO and take longer to clog) lawn mower/small engine fuel filter that fits the fuel line

It would make sense that if the bike isn't heated and it's -3* ... The seals on it may have shrunk and leaked. Also may have just a little moisture up inside, that is frozen between the seals and metal. I had an eom pet **** on my 86' till about a year ago. It was so worn out you didn't dare turn it to reserve or you would be walking home. It's safe to say it put in its time. LMFAO

You are correct, that filter is not stock. I don't run an external filter. If you pull the petcock out of the tank like iceracer said to, then you will see it has screens built into it. Personally if I were you, I would pull the tank off, pull the petcock out of it, flush the tank, clean the petcock screens, and reassemble with fresh, clean fuel and new fuel line and call it a day. I don't think an external filter is necessary. In fact, it is more likely to cause you problems with one, due to restricted flow. I'd rather not chance burning a piston because of a lean condition caused by restricted fuel flow.

This is the exact and only reason I took the fuel filter off of mine.

I run one but mine is fine brass and work well. When dirty I blow compress air  threw it and clean it and use it again.

i just use the filter on petcock. no inline filter. seems to work better than the cone inlines i used to use.the cones seem to get clogged really quick
