« on: March 15, 2016, 04:10:31 am »
lt500r. In need of slide, needle, needle jet. Hard starting issues. If Ebay carbs are junk where can the 3 air leaking parts needed be found and part no's? The Ebay sellers claim they will work on this machine. As always thanks for all your help!! Thanks Steve

I'm not an expert, but I have the 88+ small reed cylinder and purchased a new modified carb from Jerry Hall.  The carb is a TM38-85 that has been bored to 41mm and the air correction jet removed.

Here is Hall's recommendations for carb setup I have saved:

"ONLY USE GENUINE MIKUNI JETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lid on the air box, foam filter 350 to 390 main jet
Lid off of the air box foam filter 380 to 470
Pilot jet 22.5 to 25
Needle 6DK3 2nd or 3rd clip position from top
Needle Jet R-0 to R-6 389 series
Air screw 1 1/2 turns out from the seated position Plus or minus 1/4 turn
No air correction jet
4.0 slide
3.5 needle seat
float arm parallel with the gasket surface (without the floats touching the float arm)

If your bike does not run good and reliable with the above jetting range YOU HAVE OTHER PROBLEMS WITH YOUR ENGINE OR ELECTRICAL"

Thanks so much for the carb help!
I'm new here so I haven't begun to scratched the surface of this forum so forgive me for not knowing who you were until now! Then I looked over to see who was trying to help me and clicked on your posts of your building history of your quad and I am so honored after reading through the years of all your tough trial and error experiences! Tells me I have some catching up to do here!
I've ridden many stock factory new quads over 30 yrs where I never needed to do much since I only owned them for a few years before trading them out for another new one so I have very little builder skills until now w/ this 87 bought cheap in pretty good shape considering her age and all. Cant afford new anymore and maybe a good thing since I'm learning so much from the best here on this site and even better on how to greatly improve the stock zilla to better than new performance! I'll keep on listening and studying with much interest, daily! Can hardly wait to get up in the morning to read deeper into this bundle of endless knowledge, here!
Yesterday before i got your help I ordered from Carb Parts Warehouse. a new slide, needle and needle jet. Dont know the part #'s but I gave him the description I gave you of the carb. I'm pretty much stock w/ 38. Hope this will help w/ hard starting issues!
 Ears wide open!!!

Just got my Carb parts. Does this add up to the carb I listed above.
  6fm 46 Needle
  389 r2 needle jet
  4.0 slide (with 1 - 2P stamped on side)
I just phisicaly copied the the part no's down off parts.
I'm excited to rush out and through these parts in but better judgement from past experiences ''yells at me'' to just hold on here, one more day wont kill me. lol
These no's don't match up on my needle jet as stated by Rogue1970. His carb might not be exatly as mine. Hope these are correct. I cant figure out why the manual doesn't give this info. Thanks again, really great help from so many and hopefully will help others, as well!

Hey guy clik on lt500r go to 87-90 engine changes and all proper stock carb info is there because internal part changes were made 87-90 and it also tells Carb# s and what 1 fits the year 1 u have and the proper jets an internal parts that shld be in it. If u buy an eBay carb contact seller an ask him what numbers on the top square pad on the intake side of the Carb . The top # s the main # u need to no.

Sorry been awhile since I have logged in. My stock carb was fine. I finally listened to everyone's comments and with their help starts now with ONE kick! Here is the magic. Start with slide and adjust with all cable tension loose then re tighten to specs, never to adjust again! Adjust air screw 1 1/2 turns out. Now prime kick, key off, choke closed and what this does is pomp air and fuel into cylinder and out exhaust wetting everything, Next Bring kicker TDC just past first click not second one ''very important'' and this way you'll get a complete 360 deg. full turn on the flywheel for the most spark possible. Bring kicker to top with your boot and give it all you got w/ key in on position. Once started fine tune air screw and test ride re-adjusting until your quick on response then on wide open without any squats! What a trip this has been for me thinking the 87 carb was junk....couldn't have been more wrong! The ole stock carb was definitely the best carb for this 87 stock motor! Hope this helps someone with hard starting issues.
