front sprocket nut torque
« on: October 12, 2018, 07:27:21 am »
Hey guys, I rebuilt my 500 engine and the front sprocket shaft spins nice and smooth when in neutral.  I tightened up the front sprocket shaft nut and now it spins much harder.  When the nut is tight, it is about flush with the end of the shaft.  Is this normal?  I could loosen the nut but would think you would want a full nut on the shaft (no pun).  thanks guys

I just figured it out.  It is the oring between the spacer and the bearing race.  If I take out the oring, I can tighten it up and still spins smooth.  So now the question is, why does the oring cause this issue.  am I missing something??  thanks

What are you torquing the nut to? My only thought is perhaps the nut is being over-torqued and the shaft is being pulled too hard into the bearings and interfering with their rotation?

The spacer sits inside of the oil seal on the case, right? And the o-ring sits behind or inside of the spacer?

i didnt even put a torque wrench on it yet, i just snugged it up with a wrench not very hard.  The spacer is inside of the seal, and the oring is in between the spacer and the bearing race.  When i tighten the nut it is compressing the oring and making it hard to rotate.  When i take out the oring and tighten the nut everything turns smooth and freely.  Thanks
