Cutting cases to fit a center gasket
« on: February 11, 2016, 02:05:09 pm »
My cases have a slight oil leak coming from near the swing arm mount from them being warped outward and away from each other from welding and they also have a small gap where the halves meet below the back of the cylinder from what looks like a screwdriver being used to jimmy them apart. I would like to cut down the faces of the case halves by 0.3mm per side to fit a 0.6mm gasket between to fix these problems.
Has anyone done this before or can anyone think of any problems with doing this? Also, if there is a machinist on here, could you please tell me what the best machine is for this job.
Thanks

That would work just fine but you will have to make a gasket that will have a compressed thickness equaling the amount machined from the cases.

We have done this many times over the years for engines that use a center case gasket.   We just run extra gaskets and machine the cases until it equals the thickness of the extra gaskets.  We use our Bridgeport mill for this type of operation.

Cometic makes some really high quality gaskets BUT nobody that I know of makes a case gasket for the 500 or the 250's.

Contact cometic and see what it'd take to have them make AFM (aluminum Foam material) for the center cases.

This might be a good alternative for people with case problems that would want to weld them back up but are unable to re-surface the centers as nobody currently makes a case gasket for these bikes.

P.S. their AFM gasket thicknesses compresses to much less than their specified specs.

Thanks motorgeek. There are a few experienced machinists around so I'll be able to sort that out easily. It's interesting that you're able to add centre gaskets though.

Glamisrider, I'll just cut them myself from gasket sheet which will give me a bit of freedom to take off just the right amount of material from the cases as the sheets come in different thicknesses. I've made a center case gasket before from 0.6mm sheet without a problem.
