88 LT500R not starting
« on: May 14, 2024, 01:13:51 pm »
Picked up a couple of months ago, knew it wasn't running.  Here's what I've done:
-taken carb apart and cleaned, new pilot and main jet, new needle and seat, new mixture screw
-cleaned an absolute disaster of a mouse nest out of the filter.  Didn't see it initially, but took of the filter after not getting a start and all types of foam and insulation was jammed in their...cleaned up what got into the reeds, reeds look like new.
-cleaned gas tank, new fuel petcock and line, fresh gas mixed 32:1
-new B8ES spark plug
-compression test at 135 psi

Tried starting and using choke, would get 1 almost like it's trying to start, then that's it...I'd step away, following the starting procedure listed on this forum and get 1 almost fire, then nothing after a bunch of kicks

So I took off the flywheel, key looks ok, but still ordering a new one.  I went to look at the stator to see if timing was correct, and I'm not seeing a notch to even line up.  Anyone else ever see this?  I tested the stator and all came back ok, just noticed the R/Y and B/W wires aren't connected, which I'm assuming is because the removed the headlight.

Any other ideas here?  Do I try to pick up a new stator?

I haven't messed with 500 in forever but 20 years ago I had the same issue. Stator tested okay, but would only muster up enough power to spark every 3 to 5 kicks. Replaced the source coil and she fired every time.

The last RM stator I purchased didn't have the timing mark on it.Had to match up the mark on the old one....One other thing is make sure the engine has a good ground to the mounts...I had mounts and frame powder coated on one and it would pop every once in awhile but not start, cleaned the powder coating off the mounts and engine and it fired right up...See if you're getting good spark with the plug out and kicking it over.
Can,t fix stupid.:)
