1991 Reed Block with Boyesen reeds- Does this look right?
« on: October 26, 2013, 11:37:01 am »
My apologies, I put this in the wrong section. I am so used to asking questions about my zilla I automatically went here! I tried to move it, but not sure how to do that!!

I took the reed block out my 1991 lt250r when I pulled the carb to clean it.  One side seems sealed and on the other side the reed petals have a gap. I don't think this is a good thing, but I am not sure. The bike smokes a lot when running. The PO said he was using a 50:1 ratio mix.  The air/fuel mixture screw was out 2 1/4 turns.  This may have something to do with that as well.  The bike started on the third kick yesterday, but the PO said if it sits for a bit it almost has to be pull started.  That is what happened when I picked it up.  I have been going out the past few days and kicking it over. Yesterday she started without the choke on. Just wanting to make this a consistent starter.

Any ideas?

The bike came with a  Vforce reed block as well. I think I am going to install when I put it all back together. Are the V-force reeds better than a stock block with boyesen reeds?

Thanks

Yes, That is a problemo! Some people say flip the reeds over, some just replace the reeds. Depends on your budget. Worth a shot to flip them and see if that fixes the starting issue. If it works its $FREE!!! you might want to get a full matching set of screws and use LOCTITE!

I make carbon case savers, and sprocket covers for a bunch of crazies that own ancient bikes, Wait, I have an ancient LT250 too!!!

I appreciate the info. I will give that a try. I am also going to give the V-force set a whirl. I have been reading about reed block spacers, is this something I should pick up and use as well? The bike will be used as a duner and for trail riding. Thanks again.

Me personally, i would flip the reeds and see how it works, Dont know how much $$$ you want to spend, I do not have the vforce reeds, or a spacer. My bike is an 87, It has some port work, a bills pipe, carbon reeds, 38mm pwk and it runs pretty good. I would not mind going with the vforce setup, but i think the gains are minimal per dollar spent. Best cheap mod i've ever done to any bike is drop the frt countershaft sprocket by one tooth. Makes a stock bike pull a lot harder thru the gears. Gotta think how often you are topped out in 6th gear, especially in the dunes. so i shorten up the gears by doing this, costs about $15.00 lol. Most people mess with gearing after they build the motor, i usually do it as one of the first mods. Gotta love the look on someones face when they ask whats done and you can say the motor is stock! No one hardly asks about gearing lol!!!

The six bolt 88+ 250,s and 500,s don,t need/use the reed spacers. The 87 5 bolt cages its recommended but not the small intake.I,d throw the V force ones in there if they look good.Them Boyesens look bigtime toast.
Can,t fix stupid.:)

Those reeds on that block need to be replaced. Try flipping them over but they probably still wont sit flat which is no good. Vforce reeds are very nice! Post up some pictures of those. Block spacers/reed/torque spacers seem to give a bit more bottom end. Theyre a pretty cheap mod. Give it a whirl and see if ya like it.

Thanks for the info guys!  I will post some pics of the v force reed block next week. I left them at work when I brought the bike home. They look pretty clean. The bike is completely torn down now and ready for sand blasting then off to powder coat.  It will be a bit before I get to fire it up again.
