I've had the same ear re-inforcement.  My cylinder **** out enough to break the case like MotorGeek talked about.  Here are pictures of my broken cylinder:

I sent my cylinder off and had it fixed by MotorGeek.  I think your JB weld idea would work for a little bit, but you run the risk of breaking your case.  That will double your repair cost if that happens.
