Swing arm install
« on: December 16, 2012, 02:09:20 pm »
Ive had my swing arm off a few times over the years and never really had to much problem getting it all back together. Well this time i am having a hell of a time.  I took it all apart to get my shock rebuilt. Now trying to get it to go tegether i have resistance. The book says to install the cushion lever first to the frame which i did, then i cant get the swinger to fit on the mounts.  Anybody got Any tricks or a different way to go.

which mounts are giving you trouble?  between the frame and engine?  check the pivot bushings to be sure there all the way in.  also a good time to grease them if there still good.  same thing with the cushion lever pivot where it mounts to the swingarm, check that there in all the way.  if the axle is still in, take it out it makes it easier, or set the swinger up on a jack and then you can work on the front without haveing to hold the rear up.

you can get the shock out without removing the swingarm.  done it a few times before.

The whole thing is giving me problems.  Pivot points at the swinger are all the way in. I measured and there should be enough room for a slight press fit between the cases and swinger.  I will try taking out the axle like sblt says and see if it is any easier.

Lift the back off the floor by the grab bar tied to something overhead and follow the sequence in the manual, it really works well. cushion lever pivot bolt is the first thing to remove.. and LAST to install...put the swingarm pivot in and install the shock before attaching the cushion lever to the swingarm...that way you can move the swingarm up or down to get to the lower shock mount.

I do the following with the bike on a floor jack with a block across the frame rails to the rear of the engine lower center mount bolt.

1) install the swing arm pivot bolt
2) Put the motor in (if it's out).
      A) Put some rags around the frame both bottom bars (in front & back on center bolt holes & both lower vertical bars)
      B) Put the motor in the frame
      C) Installing the center bottom bolt so it pivots front to back
3) Rotate the rear of the motor down in between the swinger slots (grease EVERYTHING including the dust caps where the motor slips in between them) and get bolted up.
4) lower the bike frame on the jack so you can access the lower shock mount on the cushion lever and bolt it up, jack it up and bolt up the top shock mount.
4) lower/jack up the frame until it is around or just about above center travel and the cushion lever bolt hole should line up.  Grease both sides of the dust caps that always help it go in between the swinger mount points.  If you can not get the cushion lever to go inside the swinger it's ok to use a dead blow on the solid parts.  And I also use a blunt punch on the recesses of the large center bearing to rotate it to get it to line up with the swinger/cushion lever mount bolt holes

Hope this helps
