Starting point for rear shock
« on: March 28, 2013, 06:25:17 pm »
I picked up a pos quadzilla with a blown out shock. I just finished rebuilding it with all new bushings seals and o ring. The problem is the service Manual with no shock info. When I took it apart the rebound and compression settings where maxed out, srewed all the way in. So I'm looking for a good starting point. What is stock settings? I was gonna just start at 5 turns out on both but any help would be great. Starting from scratch makes my tuning more difficult.

from what I've heard the setting adjust less than 10% from one end to the other so there is no real effect.  I've also been told to just run them at full.

First thing is to set the sag. Have someone with a tape measure measure the distance from the grab bar to the floor with the quad unloaded.. I.e. pull up on the grab bar and let it go. This is with you off the quad, letting the shock extend as full as its going to go with the wheels on the ground. Then you sit on the quad in a nuetral position. Measure again. Sag should be about 1/3 of toal rear wheel travel.  I forget what the zilla has for travel.. Somewhere around 9.5" ?.   So you should have around 3 inches of sag with you on the bike. If its more, you need more preload, less means less preload.  Once that is straight, I usually set the clickers both at a middle position and start riding.
Then adj. comp and rebound one at a time and keep testing to see how things feel.
This is just baseline stuff. Some conditions require different setups.  For example a mx guy is gonna want a lower ride height than a dune guy, etc.

I have 15 years experience dialing in suspension.  Thanks for the info, just trying to to get a starting point on my rebound and compression adjustments.
