Rear Shock R&R
« on: December 16, 2012, 09:59:03 pm »
I had to pull the swing arm to weld up the crack emanating from the chain slider mt hole. I needed assistance to get the rear shock out.

I had to compress the swing arm to get the lower shock bolt out and back in, requiring the extra hands. Can this job be done solo if a different sequence of removal/installation is taken?

I mean on my trx250r I could complete the task by myself with my floor jack... and honey wouldn't break a nail suzukiquadracerhq

If you need to compress the swingarm to get the bolt out, try hooking a ratchet strap between the grab bar and swingarm.
Ratchet the teeth one at a time until the bolt has no more tension, remove bolt.
If it's on a floor jack instead of a stand, sometimes all you need to do is keep the tires on it, then adjust the jack until the weight of the quad on the swingarm takes all the pressure off the bolt.
If the weight of the quad by itself is not enough for some reason, honey can sit on the seat without breaking any nails  :D
Once the bolt is removed, you can jack it back up or put it on a stand to finish disassembly.

Same advice I just posted on swingarm install...FIRST you all should have and read that ol' suzuki manual...surprisingly good info there.. anyway,.. suspend the rear of the bike somehow (chain off the rafters or something) and take out the cushion lever pivot bolt from the swingarm, move the swingarm up or down and do whatever you want with the shock.

take out the cushion lever pivot bolt from the swingarm, move the swingarm up or down and do whatever you want with the shock.

This can get tricky as you need to put it back together at the same point/height.
1) D like dale says jack up the bike all the way so the swing arm fully drops, remove the cushion lever nut
3) remove the upper shock mount bolt completely & move the shock forward
2) Drop the bike to some where around 1/2 stance, there will be a point at which the load on the cushion lever bolt lightens, use a long 3/8 extension to lightly drive the bolt out with a dead blow (DO NOT HAMMER THE $HIT OUT OF IT, should come out fairly easy if greased last time it was installed)).
4) The bolt should hit the frame where the rear brake lever is mounted but the bolt should be out of the swinger.  Jack the bike back up and pull the cushion level bolt out through the side.
5) Swing arm will still be attached to cushion lever but you should be able to lift on the grab bar and push down ont he swinger with your foot to separate the two.
6) Once separated you should be able to move the bike /frame up & down and remove the shock bolts and the shock

NOTE; it's a PIA to get back in, I stripped a bolt one time trying to drive it in at because I could not remember the height to line up the cushion lever bolt hole with the swinger and was trying to force it in at TDC (AKA fully jacked up).

If I missed something or left something out please chime in

Does anyone know where I can get the adjustment knobs for shock and reservoir? Both of mine are missing.
