Putting Banshee Shocks On The Zilla
« on: May 01, 2013, 04:59:50 pm »
Anybody ever done this? I have banshee shocks but the mounting points on the shocks are just a hair to wide, the rubber bushing in the top of the shock won't squeeze into my shock mount and the spacer on the bottom of the shock is to long and won't fit in my lower shock mount.

el diablo was running one on his zilla for awhile, maybe he can chime in on what exactly he did, i think he ran it upside down at first then placed it right side up after he made a small notch on the spine of the frame.

Is there a better option for front shocks out there? Yfz450?

There most definitely is Dez but these were $74 and what I was told a direct replacement. Got it figured out though I'm gonna have to do a little grinding on the spacers and sanding on the bushings to get them to fit. Suspension on my build at this time is a patch job to get me through a season or too until I can afford a nicer set up or can find a yfz450 or ltz400 rolling chassis cheap enough to get me to do a hybrid swap.

i was just talking about the rear shock, the front my other friend ran 660 raptor shocks up front. they are suppose to swap with 700 raptor se (resi) shocks that also swap with yfz 450 shocks. el diablo is working on running my ltr 450 shock up front on his zilla.

put the spindles on to be sure the joints don't bind.

i wouldn't have used stock banshee shocks.  they look nice but still, banshees i've rode the front shocks are crap.  maybe they'll work better on a zilla

It seriously is a patch job suspension set up this is temporary only because these shocks were cheaper than replacement shock bearings for the stock shocks. They're not gonna be great performing shocks and I know that ill have to compensate with my riding style and adjust.

I would have done more tonight as far as front end re-assembly but putting the new wheel bearings back in took way longer than it should have. And the new ball joints i didn't pick them up from my house until late so they're not in the a arms yet either.

Buckeye--remember all your " how too"  assembly tips because I will be about 3 weeks behind you on my re-assembly.  I got my parts back today from power coaters--oh they look good!!!   but the frame gusseting and powder coating took so long I missed my window of available assembly time so mow I cant touch it for about 3 weeks. Frame is the most awasome metalic candy blue.  I will [post pictures as I start the build.

Mike on your wheel bearings make sure your hubs (if powder coated) didn't have any powder run inside them where the bearings go. If they did sand the crap our of where the powder is at or your bearings will fight like hell going in and end up turning a 30-40 minute job into a 3 hour job and lots of yelling and cussing!

The powder coater did a great job of taping all parts off and pluging the frame bolt holes but I will chase them all because they did get some media blasting im sure.  With the exception my greese zirks on front hubs and rear bearing carrier got covered up with powder coat.  I will see if i can sand the PC off the zirk tip or just replace the zirk--no big deal either way.  As others stated I will put my bearings in the freezer over night and put my spindle  in the oven at about 200 for a bit.  I borrowed a small press so I dont have to beat on it.

Buckeye--have you-or did you- rebuild your bearings in the rear suspension cushion lever---my smaller one was SOLID rust.

My large one in my cushion is solid rust. I have the bearing and seals from Honda east to replace it but I haven't yet. And now my son and I are both up sick tonight and my fiancé is having a bridal shower tomorrow so hopefully me and my little man get better tomorrow so I can work on my build Sunday. That was my first experience putting new wheel bearings in and I didn't do any research on tricks and tips so I beat and beat and let out a spartan like roar when I got them in! My a arm bearings went in pretty easy. My powder coater did a one day turn around on all my parts but got my hubs and wheels separate from my frame he did a way nicer job on my frame but for $250 I'm not complaining.

Quadman do you have a build thread going on here?

Did you use a press to put in or take out the bearings?

I pressed them out of the a arms the wheel bearings came out easy with socket, extension, and a hammer.
