Frame gussets/reinforcement/repair pics and suggestions??
« on: January 10, 2016, 04:55:34 pm »
Had my welder make up some gussets for the frame.  The bolt holes for the stator side foot peg were shot.  SO he found some pipe to weld in there.  Cut out the old inserts and welded this in.  Will use a 7/16 bolt with a nut on the back side.  Also reinforced the frame where the foot pegs bolt on.  Added gussets on what we think are weak spots on the frame.  And really reinforced the seat latch area.    Can anyone else think of anything else I should do before sending this out to powder coat?

what do you weigh?
What do you ride?
How hard/fast do you ride?

I've busted just about every part of my frame including breaking the frame rails all the way through in 4 different places over the last 3 years but I'm a big guy and I ride the dunes pretty hard/fast.  On the contrary Bfuss rides with me most of the time and he's only suffered a few common cracks but he's at least 50lbs lighter.

Known weaknesses, the plate on the underside cushion lever bridge (87s), the left side swing arms bolt plate (both sides, in & out), top plate of the seat latch cross member.

I weigh 250lbs.  Right now I mainly ride around the house in the wide open farm fields. But this will be my high power dune quad.  Not big into jumping.  I have had many quads and haven't had a problem with any of them but now is the time to try to prevent cracks from happening.  For some reason the pictures got removed from photo bucket so here they are again.  Hopefully they stay this time!!

I'd gusset your seat latch bracket too.  Just about every frame i've seen has/gets cracks especially if it's a dune bike.

Done.  There are strips of metal welded on the front and back sides of it.  And everyone I have seen has been **** there also

Tried downloading your pics and marking them up but for some reason nothing would recognize the file and allow me to edit it.....so....

I would do the parts I mentioned earlier "
1) 1 the plate on the underside cushion lever bridge (87s),
2) 2 the left side swing arms bolt cover plates (both sides, in & out) and weld up that gap on the bottom cover where it meets the lower frame rail.
3) 4 top plate of the seat latch cross member and flat gusset it to the frame rails front & back
4) 2 the front of the front down tubes where it's a 90
5) 2 the front of the upper frame tube where it ties in to the front of the shock towers
6) 4 Horizontal (flat) gusset the shock tower bridge to the frame rails front & back (BE CAREFUL NOT to fill up the clearance to get the radiator in & out) use your radiator to test fit these gussets before welding them in
7) 4 Horizontal (flat) gusset the lower frame cross tube (in front of the steering stem bushing)
8) 2 horizontal gussets in back of the front motor lower cross member

May be a bit of overkill but if I had PC'd my frame 60% of it would have been ground off for repairs.  I only paint my frame as each season I seem to have cracks that need repair, Duplicolor Old Ford Blue at O'rileys.
