ChrisG's 6 Inch LED Light

Ordered ChrisG's 6 inch led light last week.  Order went smooth as silk and shipping was zilla fast!  Unpacked the light and was impressed with the quality and feel of the light.  The light is going on my KFX 700 and haven't had a chance to mount it yet as I am having some custom brackets made.  I hooked the light up to some power and shot some photos for everyone to check out.  Forgive my photo skills as I am no Peter Lik  ;)

Does installation on a Zilla require a battery?  Regulator/rectifier? Rewound stator? Black magic?

You'll need all of the above, unless you want to run an independent high capacity battery that you have to remove and charge after every ride.
From what I've read, Ricky Stator has a charging system made for a banshee that'll work on the zilla.
I believe it's this one, maybe someone can chime in and clarify? (Rogue1970 comes to mind, check his thread at the bottom of my post)

Anyway, once you get a rectifier/regulator set up, you'll need a battery to charge since the idle current/voltage of the stator isn't adequate for a driving light.
The battery provides adequate current and voltage to run either an LED setup for an HID at idle, or while the engine isn't running for that matter.
At that point, all you need to do is hook up the LED's and go blind banshee riders.


One alternative (something I'm still confused about) is to buy an LED lightbar that's already set up to run on 12VAC direct from the stator.
I've only seen one advertised (it was from bajadesigns.com, but that was months ago and I can't find it now), but their drawbacks are that you're limited to running the LED array that they have available (you don't have the lightbar options ChrisG has available) and it's probably more expensive as a result of additional components needed to rectify AC current.
However, it's probably a plug and play setup, just hook the power wires to the wires that went to the original light, mount it, and run.
I just got through doing considerable research into the subject trying to find bajadesigns' AC lightbar setup, and I've come up with a different retailer as a result:

So what I get out of it is that if you buy their LX series of LED lightbars, you can run it on AC current.
However, when I looked at the 10W discovery lightbar, it said 9-32V DC input in the description.
This can mean one of two things....
1. They're full of BS about all of their lights being able to run on AC current.
2. Other LED lightbars that specify 9-32V DC input may work fine with AC current.

If the first is the case, they'd probably have quite a few returns and warranty claims after guys like us smoked the LED's when we tried them on AC current.
If the second is the case, perhaps ChrisG's lightbars can actually run on AC current...I doubt anyone is brave enough to risk that kind of dough on a theory.
I don't see anything in the LX series description that it's capable of AC current, nor does it say anything about them containing additional drivers and rectifiers to handle it.

Initially, when I first started hearing about LED's on quads, I thought running an LED with AC current would fry it, then I heard that LED tail lights worked fine and got me to thinking that some diodes are designed to run on AC current (the diode trio in an alternator for example), and if those diodes hold up fine then a big LED like a CREE XM-L shouldn't have any problems with it.
Well, come to find out, they're fired up with a driver that regulates the amount of voltage and current that goes into them, at least in battery powered flashlights, so the drivers might not be able to handle varying voltage and AC current but the LED itself might.
Now I'm hearing that the LED lightbars from lazerstar can handle AC current....so I'm honestly clueless at this point.
Maybe someone should call these guys up at lazerstar and find out the whole story about AC current and LED lightbars.
If the answer is that most any LED lightbars can run AC current without a battery, then I suspect ChrisG is going to have a hard time keeping lightbars in stock :D

Hey Chris can you chime in on wither or not your light s will run on AC, especially AC that has varying current?

Just got off the phone with Dennis Lusardi who either works for or is an owner at Laser Star.

Dennis said all of the Laser Star LEDs do work with LEDs as long as they do NOT exceed 32 volts, any more than that an they will burn up.  He also said that Laser Star LED products are guaranteed to work and they will stand behind their LEDs working on AC bikes up to 32 volts max if there is any problems.

He also said that the lights they have have very little Amperage draw
This 3 watt, double row, 12 LED light draws 1.32 AMPS, he said could run 2 of these on a 2 stroke stator

How do I regulate my voltage? My zilla has about 10v at idle but 46v in the upper RPM's. Defective regulator?

Glamisrider...that's awesome news!
It means that us LT owners DO NOT need to set up a DC charging system to run LED's!
All of those sweet light bars are basically plug and play, HID power without the hassle :D
I don't understand a few things about the light bar that you posted though, is it 3W per LED, or 3W total power?
We've got 80W or so to play with, and you can buy a tiny handheld flashlight with more than 3W total power.
According to the amp draw, it's a 7-8W draw on the system, so we could effectively run 8-10 of these things, more with the higher watt Ricky Stator coils.
Now, if the LED's are 3W each and there's 12 of them, that means it's 36W per bar, 72W total.
7200 lumens is still a LOT of light though...driving lights in the US are limited to 1500 lumens +/-10%, so you're looking at getting more than twice the lumens out of your LT than your car's headlights.


Brian, your voltage regulator is either:
Defective (buy a new one)
Not tied into the lighting circuit (tee it directly to the positive wire on lighting circuit)
Corroded or no ground path (the regulator grounds directly through the bolt that holds it to the frame)

The voltage regulator basically dumps the excess electricity into the frame, so if it exceeds 12V, it starts trickling the charge into the frame until voltage stabilizes at 12V or less.
Without the voltage regulator, your stator will produce a crazy amount of voltage and will easily burn out a halogen driving light.
With a full load on the stator (80W or so) the voltage regulator won't ground hardly any of that charge since the lights alone are sufficient to pull the voltage down to normal levels.
If you wanted to really go to the next level and you're planning on using an LED lightbar, rated at 32V or so, you could buy a 28V regulator and the stator would have to work less at lower RPM (no current drain until you reach an RPM that develops 28V at no load).

I'm starting to put my lt500 back together and was thinking about buying the rigid 10" led light bar but wasn't sure if it would work.

I noticed the lazer star appears to from what you guys said.

Has anybody actually installed one of these lights on a lt500 without having to make any modifications to the charging system?

Yes. This was done and worked without problems.

I have a rewound stator and that probably wasn't needed. Otherwise completely stock electrical system.

I have it on good authority that these lights work with a stock set up and 130w lighting coil, should probably even work with a stock lighting coil set up
