Compress the shock, if it comes up immediately then you've got issues.

If you push it down and it comes up slow and you can hear the oil moving then you're probably ok.

Also it will feel like a pogo stick since it has only spring and no oil dampening to assist.

Jerry Hall does rebuild (revalve, new spring, new oil, etc) the 500 shocks not sure about the 250 though.
