What would be the best sprockets to run for 18" rear tires on 8" rims?

I've got 13/42 right now with 20" rears and she seems kinda short geared,,,

I'd assume 13/38 with 18's would be close enough? but i'd like some feedback about it

What does short geared mean? Shifting a lot?

Yea and i can literally run up anything in 3rd-4th and take off in 2nd. First is suuuuper low geared it feels

e2s has a gearing calculator.

my 250 is the same way i think i have a 13 42 with 21 rear tire on it, and when i run with other guys as soon as we hit the road, i max out and they keep going.

i figure this is for a 250, but i can tell you from experience. 13/38 i ran on my 500 when it had 18" tires was crazy low geared. i could start off from a dead stop on dirt in 4th gear... This was with a crap DG pipe and a worn and detonating top end.

You may try a 36 instead.

with 18s on the back and13-42 gears, your probably gona be around65. my 250 with same gears and 20s is 76. with 12-42 I was at69

If i can find one im gunna go with a 36. gear it up a bit but still should be able to trail ride pretty well

trail ride with 18in tires and no skid would be the only way to ride, there is no way i can run 18in tires here. ruts are way to deep. and those sidexsides have them rutted up pretty good.

Ordered 36 and 38 tooth sprockets. Gunna see what feels better.

I've got a set of 20" holeshots I can trail too.

gearing is a lot like carb tuning. find the best combo.

Yea that's why I ordered the 2 different sizes.

Cause motor work, swingarm length, and rear shock set up will all affect what sprocket you can run (at least in my mind the way I'm picturing everything working it does)

18" rear tires come stock on an 06 ltr and for trails they dont give good ground clearance. That is more of an mx size tire. As for playing with sprocket combos, when trying to make large changes, change the front, easy and cheaper to change.so for your case i would have just gone with a plus 1 or 2, change the rear when you are close to what u want and u want to fine tune.

I've got 12 and 13 tooth front sprockets,, i dont want to go to a 14 tooth front because i know with some bikes a 14 puts the chain very close to the case. not sure about our LT's but im gunna be happy enough with the rear sprockets i've got

small rear tire and large rear sprocket is a good combo to run on trails with lots rock.

As was mentioned 1 tooth on the front + about 3 tooth on the rear. Front sprockets are cheap and easy to change. I would experiment with fronts and see what you like. with the gearing calculator on e2s or simple devision you can figure out the ratio-- than you can achieve the same ratio by going to differeent combinations of front and rear spreockets.

A 12 tooth is very small. It is a tight bend and puts more strain on the chain than a 13, or 14 tooth. I try to find the ratio that performs best--than I run a 14 tooth front and adjust the rear to get the same ratio. I usually gear down for dunes so I can grab the next gear, and gear up for fast desert riding. Its all about your preference and what works best for you. Dont be afraid to experiment.

To your origional question on best sprockets. Go with steel vs aluminum unless you have money to burn. You will NEVER notice the weight difference and steel lasts so much longer. I get all mine from rockey mountain atv.com and get the Tusk brand steel sprockets. They are very inexpensive, good quality and last.

How do you trail ride on 18"s and not drab your rear end. I run 22's and still pound my skid plate every now and then.

Ok I used that e2s gearing calc and did this to find out what sprockets I wanted.

Stock. I ran this for a little while and it was fun for toting the front end through turns lol

What I was running. 13/42 20" rears. I've got a video of my cousin chugging my bike up a hill in 3rd and it only came on pipe for a half second. He wasn't comfortable with the twist throttle so he didn't get on it. With this gearing.

Same gearing. 13/42 but with 18" rears. I was looking at 4th gear speed because that's just what I was looking at. I'm not into flat out WOT running 6th lol left the rpm alone. Talk about stump puller here though boys.

13/38 18" still kinda low. This would be for when we get the trails opened up some more, quicker running through them but still kinda low,, I'll probably run the 13/38 with my 20's

And then 13/36 18". Almost back to exactly what I had with 13/42 20". Very rideable, now i COULD grab a 14 tooth front and run 14/38 18" and it would be quite a bit faster. But I didn't get that gearing. But I think the 13/36 is what will make me happy. I really just wanted to get it close for now cause I KNEW 13/42 18" wasn't going to work. Lol

As for sprocket types: THANK YOU. I bought a steel 36t not sure about the 38. I'd prefer steel over aluminum anyway. I don't care about weight because I'm not a full blown racer.

And the trails. They are super smooth. They've hardly been used in the past 14 years so they aren't rutted or anything, and my uncle uses them for getting to his food plots, hunting stands, etc so they have been mildly maintained.
Put it this way,,, we ran the blaster through them

I will still keep my 20's cause I don't get rid of tires. Especially tires that were ran for a month before the bike was pushed into the woods to sit for 13 years. They leak a little but they are still VERY good condition.

chuck what pipe do you have, your not going to be pulling those high revs on that 250, more like 6500 to 7000.
Q pipe should pull those revs, but not that average pipe,

i highly doubt that a 250cc anything will pulling any kind of stumps out

I left the rpm alone. Just wanted to compare the theoretical speeds of sprocket vs sprocket and tire size.
and its the same PSI that I've always had,,, I've been wanting to measure it against an SCP,,, anyone wanna do some measuring with me?

No i dont think so either but a LOW gear is still a LOW gear and you need LOW gears for stump pullin,,, aka 13/42 with 18" tires = stump puller status

That was my first thought. Best to plug 7000-7500 as the rpm.
