85' & 86' 250R CUSTOM A ARMS AND SWINGERS!
« on: February 02, 2016, 06:58:00 pm »
I'm found someone who makes 85' & 86' 250R CUSTOM A ARMS AND SWINGERS!  Metaltech told me on the phone today, I'm the only guy in the USA who makes parts for the Pioneer models!  Don't quote me on prices but the a arms were $440 I think.  $220 for a chrome job on them.  Standard price for any design a arm you want.  They work with stock shocks too!  He offers 2 different swingers, both made with chromemoly steel I think.  One is tubular construction, and one is box square tubing. I can't remember the price.  The chrome job on it is $220 also.  Powder coating for $80 I think.  The phone number is 623-915-9856.  The dude was nice and didn't rush to get off the phone.  This is exactly what I've been looking for....for such a long time.  Thanks to whomever mentioned them.  (Y)

Just to find out..I called LSR and they said they discontinued parts for the 85' & 86' a year ago.

I wonder if this guy can make LT230 a arms and a longer swinger.  That would make a tremendous difference.

I'm so pumped to get these parts.  This will make my rebuild soooo much nicer.  I'm wanting to build a sharp duner.  Somebody needs to school me on duning suspension setups.  Is a +4 swinger better for duning?  Should I get metaltech +2+1 A Arms, with elka stage four's?  How do you build a duner as far as suspension goes?

A +4 swinger works good for dune riding.  I rode my hybrid on a factory swinger making 68hp and it was too much in the dunes.  The thing would wheelie without effort.  It's now at 74hp with a +4 swinger.  The +4 made it way more controllable and a little smoother of a ride.  The +2+1 arms are also a good idea for the dunes.  That little bit of extra width makes a huge difference in stability at speed while turning.

This makes me think I should start a side business of fabricating metal parts.  I did the design of my swing arm for engineering school.

Hey man i seen you made your own swingarm. I have made 3 so far. I just build parts for myself. I was curious to see how yours turned out if ya dont mind. I think the jig was the hardest part to be honest.

Here is the swinger right after it was PCed clear.  Wish I did it a little sooner to avoid getting some surface rust.  I didn't do any of the welding.  I just did all the design work and made all the drawings for the fabricator.

And one on the ATV.  I wish I did the hole cutout on the axle carrier different.  Trying to adjust the chain is a **** because of the cutout being too small to effectively get a tool around the axle carrier to rotate it.

It's basically the same thing as an SLC.  I remember seeing an SLC swinger for another quad and thought it was cool looking.

Here's a screen shot of the Solid Edge assembly I did for it.  I wish I could find the one with the stress analysis.

Got a question for you guys about metaltechs' A Arms.  The dude told me he can make any size a arm.  Extended 2" & 3" even.  Then he claimed he could build a plus 2 or 3 that would work with stock shocks.  My question is, if you make the a arms longer, does it create a lot of stress on everything.  In my mind, the more "extended" you go, the stronger the shock you will need.  I'm absolutely not going to relocate my upper a arm mounts to the top of the frame like a lot of people do.  I understand that by relocating the mounts to the top of the frame you can get a proper dune setup.  I just can't bring myself to chop on my frame.  Would +2 A arms with lets say an Ella stage five shock( of stock length)  be a good long travel setup that would be good for duning?  Or MUST I relocate the upper mounts? <1>

My metal techs for my 87 are +2 wider but doesn,t stress anything more. You will have to respring the shocks.I,m running works shocks with rezzi.Bolted up to the stock mounts although I,m not running long travel A arms.

You wont stress anything any more.

With a longer arm, you put more torque on the arm. This means that shocks will need to put more force onto the arm to balance it out. In layman's terms, the longer the arm, the stiffer your shock spring needs to be.

Also, running standard length shocks really isn't a long travel setup.

Go with the long travel setup with the +4 swinger.  Be like riding a Cadillac in the dunes.

Guys I can't bring myself to cut on my frame to relocate the upper a arm mounts up higher to facilitate a longer shock!  I just can't do it.  Does that mean I'm stuck with factory setup?

How would you expect to go to another set up without changing something?

I know, you're right.  It's not something I can do with the tools I have and besides if I was lucky enough to get the mounts removed, I'd probably have no clue as to where I should weld it back on.  Hell, I can't even weld that good.  Which means I'd have to take it to a machine shop...but I still don't know precisely where to relocate the mount to.  :(

I can say I was able to squeeze 16.5"(I think that is the length of them) shocks from a 400ex onto my 250 with +2 arms.  They just did fit.
